Fishing Season: Year-round availability, with spawning peaks generally from March to September depending on region.
Geographical Distribution: Western Atlantic: Found from North Carolina and Bermuda, through the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, extending to southeastern Brazil. Most common in tropical and subtropical coastal waters.
Habitat and Biology: Demersal species inhabiting shallow coastal waters over sandy or muddy bottoms, reefs, and seagrass beds, at depths of 10 to 100 meters. Juveniles often found in estuaries and protected bays. Feeds mainly on small fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, and benthic invertebrates. Spawning typically occurs offshore in warmer months, with group spawning events.
Length: Commonly caught at 25–35 cm (10–14 in), with a maximum recorded length of about 50 cm (20 in).
